Windows 8 Features & Release Date

Windows 8 Features And Release Date

By Joel Fernandez (G+)

Windows, being one of the most used OS, brings great challenges for Microsoft to keep its users impressed in the next version of Windows.
Although Windows 7 has done exceptionally well since its release, Microsoft has been constantly working to make the next version of Windows a better one by further improving upon the existing features, and have added new impressive Windows 8 features along with a stunning UI.
Microsoft released the early version of Windows 8 on a prototype tablet last week. Those of you who would like to taste and experience the all new Windows 8, you can download the Developer Preview, which is currently in pre-beta version. The developer version shows off the current stage of the OS. It is available for free download, and comes in three different packages:
  • (1) 64-bit version – Only the OS
  • (2) 32-bit version – Only the OS
  • (3) 64-bit version with developer tools

Windows 8 Features

Windows 8 offers a number of new Windows 8 features from its all new UI to Windows App Store and improvised security features. Here’s a list of new features and improvements which will arrive with Windows 8:

Support for both x86 PCs and ARM tablets

Windows 8 is the first edition of Windows which will work on both ARM based tablets and traditional x86 (as well as x32 and x64) PCs based on ARM processors from Intel and AMD.
“Support for ARM-based chipsets, touch, and sensors makes Windows 8 work beautifully on your choice of a full spectrum of devices, such as 10-inch slates with all-day battery life, ultra-lightweight laptops, and powerful all-in-ones with 27-inch high-definition screens,” Microsoft contends, in a Windows 8 Guide distributed with Windows Developer Preview

Windows To Go

The “Windows To Go” seems to be an exciting feature that basically allows Windows 8 to boot from a USB device (called as Live USB), including user’s programs, settings and files. The feature is designed to work with both USB 2.0 and USB 3.0, and on both legacy NIOS and UDFI firmware. However, Microsoft says that a user will not be able to “Hibernate” with this feature.
Windows 8“Windows To Go is a new feature in Windows 8 that enables enterprise administrators to create USB drives containing complete, managed Windows images that users can use to boot and run Windows on any Windows 7 or Windows 8 capable computer. Windows To Go makes it possible for employees to use a managed device whether they work from home, a client office or in a free seating environment. This session will discuss Windows To Go, its hardware requirements and building compatible and complementary software.”
Another interesting thing about this feature is that, if the USB drive is removed, Windows will automatically freeze, but will continue to operate if the USB drive is inserted back in the next 60 seconds after removal.

Windows Store

To compete with Apple, Windows has confirmed the introduction of a Windows Store, similar to Mac App Store, which allows users to browse through Windows applications, while developers can publish their Metro-style apps on Windows 8 devices.
Few days back, Microsoft gave a strategic view of its app store, and gave a quick demo on how it works. Microsoft revealed that the Windows App Store will be the only place where users can access the Metro-styled apps. Here’s a quick demo that shows how users will be able to buy their apps:

Windows 8 User Interface

Speaking about the UI, Windows 8 certainly has got a mind blowing interactive UI, which has been extensively redesigned to a “Metro-style” design, which shows the most important information to you, embodies simplicity, and gives you full control over it. The UI is designed to provide a fluid and intuitive interaction and navigation with touch, or a mouse and keyboard.
Julie Larson-Green, Corporate Vice President, Windows who stated: “Everything that’s great about Windows 7, is better in Windows 8,” gave a quick hands on look at the Windows 8 user-interface. Here are some of the screenshots she released:
Windows Logon Screen – Unlike the traditional way of entering a password to unlock the screen, Windows 8 can be unlocked by just tapping on the right areas of the screen.
Windows 8 Features
Windows 8 Start Screen – The Start screen is yet another impressive UI. The screen basically groups all your applications together, which you can easily drag and drop, or add new things.

Windows 8 Minimum System Requirements

It is reported that Windows 8 is expected to have the same system requirements as Windows 7, and will run on existing machines that run Windows 7. Here are the following minimum system requirements to run Windows 8:
Processor: 1GHz or faster 32-bit or 64-bit processor
RAM: 1GB (32-bit) or 2GB (64-bit)
HD Space: 16GB for 32-bit (or 20GB for 64-bit)

Windows 8 & Cloud Computing

It has been reported in the official Microsoft blog that Windows 8 will be tied to Microsoft’s SkyDrive, which will allow users to access their digitally stored data via Windows 8 on their computers, laptops, mobile devices… The industry’s leading cloud computing provider, Rackspace explains exactly how cloud computing works.

Windows 8 Bringing Kinect to Laptops?

Microsoft is also planning to build Kinect sensors into laptops. Prototypes have already been released, and were confirmed to be official. The sensors would be placed where the webcam is currently placed, and there could be an IR LED at the bottom of the screen. If Microsoft techs manage to drive the price of sensors down, it might even become a standard feature. There are also talks of miniaturized Kinect hardware for notebooks.

Windows 8 Release Date

We can expect Windows 8 to be launched sometime in mid-late 2012, however, it’s too early to predict the Windows 8 release date, since it is still under development. Nevertheless, the only question that haunts each and every one of us – Will Windows 8 Microsoft win the battle against Apple which it had lost several years back?

How To Scan and Fix Registry with Registry Cleaner?

 by: Austin Porter

Whenever you use your PC, it either reads or inserts entry onto a particular spot in its system. Overtime, this process can accumulate and cause some problems which are hard to ignore. It's because of this why you regularly have to scan and fix registry of your PC using related cleaner software. Continue reading to learn more about this. I will also be discussing a top quality registry cleaner software that speed up my PC quickly.

The computer has to remember a lot of things - hardware attached, selected system options, applications around, etc. Each time you use it, it has to go through all of these entries. However, there may also be invalid, missing or double entries. Such can be caused by anything from removing a hardware previously attached, to deleting a file or program.

When such happens, you will notice that the PC will begin to work a lot slower than before. Although it goes through all these entries in a very fast manner, still it may take some time if there's too much to read. Eventually, you will also notice certain programs will refuse to run, and system crashes will surface more frequently.

Of course you can always take your computer to an expert to have all unnecessary entries removed. However, it may come with a steep price tag. What's more, it's supposed to be done periodically to keep your computer in tip-top shape. Doing it on your own is definitely not recommendable, as you can even cause some irreversible damages.

What you can do is to install and run registry cleaner software. This will automatically examine each of the entries made from day one. It removes safely and effectively those which are already invalid, missing or were recorded twice. This is a much safer way for you to do so, instead of attempting to manually remove entries which can cause the PC problems.

You may scan and fix registry using free software you may find online. In downloading them, carefully read the system requirements so you're installing something that will work best for your computer. Also, see to it you get one from a reputable website. There are also those which you may purchase, often with other useful tools. I personally managed to clean up my computer by downloading high quality registry cleaner software.

Things to consider when buying a Laptop

by

Several brands of laptops are available in the market manufactured for the ease of consumer in their work and opening more ways for the entertainment industry. However comparing the various brands of laptops is difficult as every manufacturing company is putting its extreme effort to add more and more features to bring their branded the top priority. They have their pros and cons but the attraction makes you buy the brand that seems more appropriate to your needs. Some of the famous brands are Dell laptop, Compaq, Acer and HP laptops.

The reason that why people prefer Dell laptops over other brands is that Dell neither sell its products to retailers nor involve an intermediary between Dell and its consumers where Hp provides the laptops to your nearest computer shops where you can buy it at slightly high price than original. Both the brands are striving hard to cater the maximum needs of professional as well non-professional users. If you are confused about choosing the best laptop then read below some distinctive aspects of HP and Dell Laptops that will help you in buying a laptop.

How about buying a laptop with eye-catchy looks?

Laptops are designed in a way to attract the maximum number of people. Most of the laptops come in very sober design and pattern to be used to corporate levels. They are made in a view to be used by the upper level management as they give a mature look. In this area HP laptops lead the market by catering the needs of business community. The selection of laptop according to its shape and pattern can be decided by the personal interests of the user. If you a serious employee and wants to hold a laptop that add values to your personality then you should go with HP while Dell Laptop has also some designs that suit the needs of corporate people. It also covers designs of general interests. The teenagers can go with the funky stylish designs of Dell laptop. They also vary in features the latest laptop is equipped with latest technology to benefit the user.
Performance:

The hardware and software compatibility is one of the biggest issues selecting from used laptops. One must ensure the proper hardware specification of laptop before finalizing its purchase. For example, some used laptops are equipped with high voltage processors while some of them with low voltage but the feedback represents that the slight modification in process voltage do not affect the work as the standard voltage is enough to carry on your work for the whole day. There is slight difference in Dell and HP laptops with its performance but on average one can ignore it, as they are quite similar as far as performance is concerned.

Battery time

The battery backup time and battery life is also a crucial factor you should consider. Check if a laptop gives you good electricity back-up when you have to complete an important task while travelling. One of the most important criteria is to compare the price of both brands. It depends on you either you weight the quality more, the money or both.

The price comparison

The price structure and allocated funds are the key factors to prefer one brand over another. Dell has made it easier by offering quality products at comparable cheap process. Most of the potential buyers do not really know the reason behind cheap price of Dell products. The fact is that the Dell Company sells its branded dell laptops at its own retail outlets. It makes the laptop cheaper as the price do not include any profit share of mediator. While the HP sell its products by involving third party in the transaction that why HP laptops are high in prices as compared to dell laptops. The funds you have available to buy the laptop have a great impact on the decision to which the brand of your choice.

How a Surge Protector Can Help a Laptop Computer

by: Stephanie Larkin

Electrical power spikes can be devastating to any electronic device, but the damage to a laptop computer can be even more significant to its owner because of the potential for lost information and reduced productivity. Safeguarding laptop computers with a surge protector (also called surge suppressors) is one simple and inexpensive way to lessen the risk of physical damage or lost information due to electrical surges.

Fluctuations in electrical service are common around the world. Known as power spikes, surges, brownouts, and blackouts, these fluctuations can cause anything from fire to data loss in an unprotected laptop computer. When power returns, it can come in a rush, rising significantly above standard household voltage levels to burn wires, overwhelm circuits and potentially cause damage to laptops, adapters, and any external peripherals that may be connected to the computer. Even when the power surge is not strong enough to knock out a system, it can slowly damage the computer's components, reducing its reliability and lifespan. A surge protector diverts the extra voltage from a power surge to a ground wire, sparing harm to any connected electrical devices.

Most household appliances use 120- volt power (AC) - the level of electricity that you get from a regular electric outlet. Laptop computers covert 120- volt power to about 12 to 18 volts (DC) by way of an adapter that is usually located along the power cord. This conversion offers some measure of protection, but it never hurts to add the additional shield of a surge protector.

Surge protectors are inexpensive insurance for costly electrical gear. They also add functionality to most office environments, as they typically come in a power bar format that offers extra outlets. While most surge protectors are also power bars, not all power bars are surge protectors. Be sure to check whether surge protection is offered before purchasing a power bar. Power bars with surge protection may cost slightly more than a regular power bar.

Many office environments use surge protectors as part of their standard equipment configurations. However, portability is a key feature of laptops, thanks to their small size and alternate battery power, so laptop operators often find themselves using their laptops outside of the surge protected office. Ideally, laptops should be guarded by a surge protector wherever they are being plugged in, so a travel-size surge protector is a good investment. This is especially true in a hotel or large building where air conditioners, elevators or other equipment requires periodic bursts of large amounts of electrical power.

Not all surge protectors offer the same level of protection, and none can guarantee electrical equipment won't be damaged if there is a severe power surge such as that caused by a nearby lightning strike. A powerful surge may also damage the surge protector, so try to find a model with an indicator light that goes out if the unit fails to function properly. There are several Underwriters Laboratories (UL) ratings (found on the label) that can help you choose an appropriate surge protector, such as clamping voltage, energy absorption and dissipation, and response time. Clamping voltage is the point at which electricity is diverted to the ground wire. Look for 330 to 400 volts. Energy absorption and dissipation is the amount of energy, in joules, that the surge protector can handle before it fails. The higher the number the better. A rating of 200 to 400 joules is adequate, but a rating of 600 joules or more will offer superior protection. Response time is the delay between the power surge and the surge protector's diversion to ground. Faster is better, in this case, as the less time your laptop is exposed to the extra energy, the safer it will be. A response time of less than a nanosecond is desirable.

Power surge consumers who aren't knowledgeable about electricity and UL ratings can also judge a surge protector by its price: more expensive models tend to offer better protection than the cheapest discount store models. Quality laptop travel surge protectors can generally be purchased for less than $50 (USD), and offer a variety of features including telephone and network/broadband Ethernet jacks, and universal plugs and sockets that will work in countries with electric utilities offering 100 volt AC service to 240 volts AC service. Some travel adapters have built- in surge protection that protects laptops as well as cell phones and personal digital assistant (PDA) devices. Most laptop surge protectors are designed with convenience in mind, and are compact and easy to pack.

The last consideration in purchasing laptop surge protection is the quality of the warranty offered by the manufacturer. Some companies will offer compensation if equipment is damaged by a power surge while it is protected with a functioning surge protector, but warranties vary, so read the fine print.

How To Choose Between A Laptop And A Desktop

by: George Hutton

Owning at least one computer is becoming more and more important these days. Many businesses offer their employees the option of working from home, and many schools and universities require work to be done at least in part on a computer. Additionally, there are plenty of games and other forms of entertainment that a computer is perfect for.

In case you haven't been down to the computer store lately, then you might not be aware that there have been more and more technological advances recently, and deciding which kind of computer to buy can be a confusing choice. If you'd like to buy a computer, but haven't quite decided if you want a laptop or a desktop, then this article is for you. After reading this, you'll have a much easier decision.

The main advantages of getting a desktop is that you can get a much more powerful machine. You aren't limited to space, nor do you require a battery. Hard drives are generally larger, and there are more slots for memory, so you can upgrade a desktop machine quite a bit. Also with desktops, you can get a much larger screen, since you don't have to worry about stuffing it into your purse or briefcase.

One of the biggest drawbacks to a desktop is that it sits right there on your desk, and nowhere else. It's pretty tough to take it with you, as you have all kinds of cords and cables connecting everything together. If you ever need to do some work away from home, at a hotel for example, then you won't be able to use your desktop.

The main benefit of having a laptop, of course, is that you can take it anywhere. Most places these days have some kind of wireless Internet, either free or paid, that you can use to connect with. And if you can't find a place to plug your machine in, then the battery should last several hours, depending on what you are using your computer for.

Some drawbacks to having a laptop is limitations on size, both on the keyboard, mouse and screen. Some of the biggest laptops have screen of seventeen inches, and this might not be large enough if you need to have several windows open at once. Also, upgrading your laptop by adding memory or an additional hard drive might be a little difficult, and require professional assistance.

So depending on where and when you'll need to use your computer, you can choose which one is appropriate. If you only imagine yourself doing work at home, then a desktop is the best choice. If you need to do work in several different locations, then a laptop is the way to go. Of course, if you can afford it, getting both is always an option.

Finding A Reliable Gaming Laptop Comparison Shopping Site

by: James Keyes

Comparison shopping is the technique you should adopt while shopping for any electronic device. It is a technique that lets you compare and understand the pros and cons of any laptop. Since gaming laptop is in great demand these days, many people are trying to purchase a good laptop for gaming at an affordable price.

There are plenty of sites on the web that lets you compare laptops. Some of these sites even allow you to purchase laptops from their site. Are they reliable? You may not have a good answer to this question. Hence, you should find a reliable comparison shopping site for purchasing gaming notebooks.

Here are some qualities that will help you determine whether a comparison site is good or not:

Should not biased

They should not be biased to a particular brand and try to upsell it. A honest site will always provide you with genuine information according to your requirements.

Easy to understand

Many people cannot easily understand the jargons mentioned on such site. So, it should provide enough information on understanding basic things like what is a graphic card, what is a processor and so on. They should be able to answer all the sales related question. Technical support can be considered as an added benefit.

Should be in business since a long time

Many comparison shopping sites have started in the recent past. However, the ones that are in business since a long time understand the customers requirement and can be considered reliable. If you are able to trust that site, you won’t be having any issues in purchasing a laptop from that site.

Testing

If the site sells laptops, it should also make sure that its customers receive the machine they have ordered in working condition. That is the reason why, they should do performance testing and various kinds of test to make sure the notebook is working properly.

Return policy

Other than providing comparison shopping on gaming laptop, if the site also sells the laptops, then it should also provide with a money return policy. If the site is authentic, it will never hesitate to mention its money return policy. So, if you are not satisfied with the laptop, you can return them back and get money back without answering any questions.

HP Power Cord: Why You Should Buy The Appropriate Product

by: Ethan Hewitt

When it comes to your Compaq Presario or HP Pavilion Laptop PC, you may not appreciate the true price of an authentic HP power cord, but the guaranties on these products depend on the use of authorized parts and accessories. It is obvious that you cannot use just any power rope and get identical results as the HP power twine for your portable computer contains the AC adapter power unit that's required for charging your battery. The electric current flow depends upon the HP power wire and the AC adapter power unit or the "power brick". This system is essential to the correct operation of your Compaq Presario laptop PC or HP Pavilion laptop model.

It is important to have the proper HP power wire and powering brick when you are contemplating the issues with powering your laptop PC and the ability of the battery to hold a charge. Apart from charging your battery, the unit provides stable flow of power that keeps the elements inside your PC from experiencing power surges and further damage or info corruption. You wouldn't need your portable to be affected by power rises and only the proper HP power twine can be relied on.

It is perilous to accept inexpensive imitations of these accessories, and if your laptop PC is still under guaranty, it is very important that you only use the proper power wire. With the employment of a different powering option, the battery might not recharge correctly and you will spend at least $150 to replace the battery, but that isn't solve your problem. It is cheaper option to replace the power twine and AC adapter first since they are less than half the price of the battery. If you know where to look you can save even more. Often, they will be cheaper if acquired online .

It is important to learn the seriousness of authentic power twine to your computer's operation. Voiding your laptop's guaranty would possibly not be the sole problem, you may also cause damage to your vital info because of power spikes. If you are having battery charge lifespan Problems with your laptop, it might not be the battery but the power twine that is the culprit you are able to save a lot of money and bother by replacing this part first.

Battery life-span depends upon how much you use battery power, but it is normally predicted to continuously wear down after a year or 2. If you are having issues with recharging the battery, the difficulty may lie on the HP power cord or the AC adapter power unit. There may also be a problem with the power jack in your personal computer, that part requires disassembly of your laptop and should only be performed by a Hewlett-Packard authorized fix center. In most situations, you can solve your difficulties by ordering a replacement HP power twine, this could save lots of cost and bother.

You can check out several online stores for the perfect product for your HP laptop. Make sure you have the right one before plugging your device in.

i3, i5, i7, Quad Core, Dual Core Processors. How to they Differ?

By

If you’re in the market to buy a PC and you’re looking for the best value for money, you’ve likely asked yourself: “what’s the difference between Dual and Quad Core and what about i3, i5, and i7?”
This guide offers a basic explanation of these five types of processors and will help you determine the best for your needs.

This guide will answer the following questions:
  • What is a processor?
  • What is a core?
  • What is a multi-core processor?
  • Why do I need multiple cores?
  • How many cores do i3, i5, and i7′s have?
  • How Do Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad Compare with Core i3, i5, and i7?
  • What Does the “i” Stand for in i3, i5, and i7?
  • Do I need a Dual/Quad core or an i3/i5/i7?

What is a Processor?

The Processor or Central Processing Unit (CPU) component of your PC that carries out instructions given to it by your Operating System (Windows.) Think of the processor as a brain that receives instructions and messages (i.e. “HOT HOT HOT Burning!!!”) and sends out instructions to other hardware (i.e. “Arm: lift hand” or “mouth: open; vocal chords: scream”.)

What is a Core?

A standard processor has one core (single-core.) Single core processors only process one instruction at a time (although they do use pipelines internally, which allow several instructions to be processed together; however, they are still run one at a time.)

What is a Multi-Core Processor?

A multi-core processor is composed of two or more independent cores, each capable of processing individual instructions. A dual-core processor contains two cores, a quad-core processor contains four cores, and a hexa-core processor contains six cores.

Why do I Need Multiple Cores?

Multiple cores can be used to run two programs side by side and when an intensive program is running (AV Scan, Video conversion, CD ripping etc.) you can utilize another core to run your browser to check your email etc.
Multiple cores really shine when you’re using a program that can utilize more than one core (called Parallelization) to improve the program’s efficiency. Programs such as graphic software, games etc. can run multiple instructions at the same time and deliver faster, smoother results.
So if you use CPU-intensive software, multiple cores will likely provide a better experience when using your PC. If you use your PC to check emails and watch the occasional video, you really don’t need a multi-core processor.

How many cores do i3, i5, and i7′s have?

  • A Dual-core processor has two cores.
  • A Quad-core processor has four cores.
  • An i3 processor has 2 cores.
  • An i5 processor has 2 or 4 cores (depending on the model you have.)
  • An i7 processor has 2, 4 or 6 cores (depending on the model you have.)

How Do Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad Compare with Core i3, i5, and i7?

Added 2012/01/21:
If you’re looking for a good value PC and have decided on a Core 2 Duo, Core i3, or Core i5 (all best in value for casual computer use), please read on:
Core 2 Duo processors run two threads; i3′s and i5′s run four threads. Core 2 Duo processors are socket 775 (45/65nm); Core i3 and i5 processors are socket 1156 (nm) but only work with DDR3 RAM (Some Core 2 Duo’s work with both DDR2 and DDR3.)
For desktops, I’d stay clear of core 2 duos; for laptops, it all depends on your usage. As laptops aren’t as easy to upgrade, buying dated technology might burn you in the future when you find your Core 2 Duo PC’s motherboard only supports 4GB RAM–for example.
i5′s come with “turbo boost”; however, i3′s overclock very well if that’s your thing. That’s where I’d put my money if you’re considering Core 2 Duo, i3, and i5: the i3 provides the best value for most casual PC users.
While I focused on i3, i5, and Core 2 Duo to answer a reader’s question, the principles apply when comparing i5, i7, and Core 2 Quad. I’d go for the i5 unless you are willing to pay a premium for a little more performance.

What Does the “i” Stand for in i3, i5, and i7?

Added 2012/03/03:
I searched around the web and found speculation that the “i” stands for “Intel”; however, there’s no substantiation to that claim. After coming up with no explanation, I sent an email to Intel tech support. Here’s what they had to say (emphasis added):
Hello Rich,
Thank you for contact Intel(R) Technical Support.
We have received your request. Please be informed that the letter ‘i’ on the model number of the Processor does not stand for any particular detail, technology or feature presented on the product.
This is just a marketing brand name decision. For any additional information, please do not hesitate to contact us back.
Thank you for your understading (sic).
Sincerely,
Alvaro A.
Intel Customer Support
The i# processors are just branded that way with no special meaning.

Do I need a Dual/Quad core or an i3/i5/i7?

The reason you’re reading this guide is to find out which type of processor you need. I want to give a simple answer and, if you have more to add, please let us know in the comments. As with all computer hardware, the type of processor you need depends on your needs, for how long you want your computer to stay current, and your budget.
Here’s a very simple breakdown of what you should look to buy depending on your computing needs. All suggestions assume you are buying a pre-built PC (so you don’t have to worry about motherboard and RAM specs and so you don’t have to worry about upgrade compatibility.)
If you:
  • Browse the internet, check email, and play the occasional flash game (like Farmville): Get a single core netbook or desktop (and don’t spend more than $300 USD — Updated 12/01/21.)
  • Do your word processing, spreadsheets etc. on your PC, listen to music often, and watch movies, get a dual core or i3.
  • Play the occasional game and are happy with lower resolution and lower quality graphics (my suggestion assumes the graphics processor on the pre-built PC will be well-matched for the processor suggestions), watch HD movies etc., get a dual core or i5.
  • If you do graphic publishing, music creation, programming (and compilation), watch HD movies, and like to play visually appealing games, get a Quad core, i5, or i7.
  • If you like to have the very best hardware and play the most graphically intense games, get an i7 Extreme.
I realise my suggestions are somewhat generic but should point you in the right direction.

Apple Macbook Pro Md311ll/a 17-inch Laptop

Apple Computer has done some serious work this year on its MacBook Pro line and the latest one that we have looked at the 17-inch MD311LL/A shows that Apple isn't relying on its iPod and iPhone for its revenue. It shows that even though it uses processors built by others - Intel, in this case - it is still a serious computer company.

Interestingly, it is a computer company whose focus is on delivering some of the narrowest and lightest units on the market. Like the other MacBooks, Apple has used a single casting for the entire machine as a single unit that is less than an inch thick and while it is still 17-inches wide, it still comes in at little over five pounds which does make it a lightweight laptop that can be used for a variety of features.

There is little double that Apple knows what do to with computer components. For example, although it will only support a maximum of 8 GB of memory, the MD311LL/A 17-inch MacBook actually uses two separate video systems to deliver seamless video. For heavy duty work, it supports the AMD Radeon HDG770 video chipset with its own dedicated 1GB of GDDR5 RAM. At the same time, the Intel 3000 chipset is built into the system software so that it can rely on the Intel chipset for everyday video delivery.

The 17-inch MacBook Pro, like the others in the MacBook line, supports Thunderbolt technology which is similar to the old Applenet chain technology that allowed you to chain together Apple devices on their own dedicated high-speed network for greater throughput. In other words, if a device has the right Thunderbolt Display adapter, you can simply hook them together in a chain that can deliver up to 10 Gbps. Its Apple's proprietary network but it will also support, if the adapter is right, DVI, HDMI and other specialized devices.

Like other state-of-the-art laptops that use the quad-core I7 processor, Apple makes use of Intel's built-in multi-threading technology that allows each processor of the quad core to perform up to two tasks at the same time. In other words, you can have one device performing up to eight simultaneous tasks. Apple also makes use of Intel's direct access technology that lets each processor have full access to all available system memory on the 1333 front-side bus. The processor runs at its standard clock of 2.4 GHz and takes advantage of Intel's Turboboost mode to 3 GHz when needed.

Standard storage is handled by a 750 GB 5400-spin hard drive. This MacBook also supports an 8X CD/DVD Superdrive.

One interesting feature that all MacBooks share is the larger-than-normal glass-faced touchpad. Instead of including the extra buttons that other laptops include the MacBook's touchpad is extra large and will support functions that are similar to a more standard laptop which has the traditional left and right buttons plus a touchpad. It doesn't take long to learn to use this feature.

One thing to note, though, about the MacBook is that since it is made from a single aluminum case, it might run a little warm although they do have a pretty sophisticated cooling system to keep things running as cool as possible.

The MacBook also supports Bluetooth 2.1 and ultrafast WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, as well as having a standard tri-speed LAN port that supports 10/100/1GB speeds so it can be part of an over-the-air network, use public hotspots or be part of your home network.

It also has 3 USB 2.0 ports, a Firewire 800 port, and ExpressCard slot.

Overall, this is a fine update to a very good series and is a serious machine for users.

The best laptop

By: Abbatha Odetta

There are a number of laptops available in the market these days. With each manufacturer claiming that their laptop is the best incorporating cutting edge technologies into them. There is a new laptop being launched almost every week with a plethora of them being launched at electronic exhibitions.

So how can one decide which is the best laptop among them all? The fact is the laptops are so closely matched in features that if you declare a particular model of laptop as the best. You will have at least 10 other laptops manufactured by other computer manufacturers that has the same configuration. Besides each laptop fits a particular need or demand for it in the market. So there cannot be one laptop that is best suited to the needs of every individual in the computer users’ universe.

So how about we build our own version of the best laptop and see how long it takes for the manufacturers to actually build one and launch it in the market.

Display – The best laptop should have a mutitouch touch sensitive surface with support for 3D graphics rendering. It must have the capacity to recognize gestures and sensors and cameras that can be configured to track retina movements. We could have an input mechanism where you blink twice in quick succession or focus on a particular button to press it.

Storage – The storage of the future is already here in the form of cloud computing where you store your data on cloud farms and access it from any device you want. The rate of transfer and reading and writing data needs to be very fast.

Keyboard – maybe it is time to bid goodbye to keyboards. Touch screen surface keyboards with haptic feedback could easily replace the little keys on your laptop.

Sound – How about a technology where you would not need earphones the sound waves can be focused on a user so only they can hear and not disturb the people around them.

Processor – A faster and smaller processor which consumes very little power and draws energy from an embedded solar panel. Overheating has always been a problem with processor so we need a processor which can remain cool at all times.

Frame – A screen that can fold along with the motherboard just like you would roll a piece of paper and slip it in your pocket. With foldable solar panels forming a transparent layer or lining the back of the screen to draw power from the sun to run the laptop.

The possibilities are endless, what do you wish to have in the best laptop?
